Besides its highly antioxidant effect it binds in a very effective way toxins, viruses and pathogens and it acts as a natural immune modulator. These properties contribute to an improved health status specifically in situations which are stressful for the animals.

High molecular weight polyphenols are present in most plant materials in relatively large proportions. In their native state, they are bound to polysaccharides, another type of large polymer chain. Together they constitute what is commonly known as dietary fibres. Because of their links to other molecules, the biological activity of polyphenols is limited, as their functional parts are hindered. The biopolymers of Phytaxis with their high proportion of polyphenols are not bound to any polysaccharides anymore and the functional parts are free.

Once extracted, the highly purified and hydrolysed natural biopolymers of Phytaxis have an antioxidant effect and protect the animal against tissue damage from excessive radical production. However, the properties and effects are not only attributable to the antioxidant effect. These complex structures can also interact with toxins of various origins, binding them through adsorption and neutralizing them. The same goes for viruses and bacteria which are inactivated by contact and therefore not able to pass through the intestinal mucosa into the blood stream. This action mechanism is called enterosorption. It is responsible for the products efficacy against diarrhea and some viral infections. Detoxification is also partially responsible for improved liver functions.
